The RBC Run for the Kids™, sponsored by Sunnybrook Hospital
One day, a little more than a year and a half ago, while doing the crossword puzzle over breakfast, my mom proclaimed (to no one in particular) that she was “going for a walk”. Thirty minutes later she came back. Two days later, again, seemingly out of nowhere she proclaimed “I am going for a walk” out loud (again, to no one in particular) and again thirty minutes later, she returned. This went on for about a month before the weather got colder. As winter settled in, the walks became less frequent, as the drop in temperature made comfortable walking attire, less season-friendly. After having missed her walking time for a few weeks, she decided we (as a family) NEEDED a treadmill.
*FAST FORWARD*
Over the year, the walks, have become walk-jog intervals, and the outings went from 30-minutes to almost 90-minutes. The treadmill is still being used on the colder and rainy days – Over this same period, mom had dropped the gem that she “one day” wanted to run a 5km. {ed note: between you & me, she had been completing more than 5km, almost 7km,3-5 days/week for a good 6-months at this point, spending at least half the duration of a lot of those “outings”, jogging – so I really don’t know what the hold-up was; but I digress…} 3-months ago, the moment finally ARRIVED – she was READY to do the 5km FOR REAL – and naturally, being the fitness-buff in the family, and supporting any of my family members’ healthy/fitness choices, I told her I would do it with her (and, as my sister is the ONLY one in our family who ENJOYS running – mom and I both “hate it, but we do it” – we signed her up, as well). Having brought running into her lifestyle, she wanted to pick a cause that was close to her, and also gave her some “real training time”. Lo and behold: while reading the paper, looking for the crossword, my mom saw the ad for the Sunnybrook Hospital/RBC Run for the Kids™ and decided THIS was her 5km debut. {You can check out more info on our run}
With the intro aside: My mom, sister and I are running a COMBINED 25km – they are each running 5km, and I being the glutton for “punishment” am tackling the 15km leg – on Sept 20, 2014. The race runs around Mel Lastman Square and the Yonge/Shepard area (Toronto, Ontario) {You can see the course map}
